St David is our vibrant mixed Year 4 and Year 5 class, where children grow in independence, maturity, and confidence as they continue their journey through Key Stage 2. In this setting, we embrace the strengths of a mixed-age class, encouraging collaboration, peer support, and leadership. Children in St David are given the opportunity to learn from each other, celebrate one another’s achievements, and develop a strong sense of community.
The curriculum in St David is broad, balanced, and engaging, building on the foundations laid in earlier years. Our lessons are carefully planned to ensure that both year groups are challenged and supported appropriately, with clear learning objectives and high expectations for all. Pupils enjoy rich learning experiences across all subjects—from deepening their comprehension and writing skills in English to exploring complex problem-solving in maths. We also promote creativity through subjects such as art, music, and drama, while nurturing curiosity and critical thinking in science, history, and geography.
Faith continues to be at the heart of everything we do in St David. The children grow in their understanding of Catholic teachings and Gospel values, reflecting regularly through class prayer, collective worship, and discussions about how they can make a positive difference in the world. We encourage pupils to be kind, respectful, and responsible role models, both in the classroom and across the wider school community.
By Years 4 and 5, children begin, we support them to become confident, independent learners who are not afraid to make mistakes, ask questions, and strive to do their best. With strong routines, a nurturing environment, and a strong focus on personal development, we help each child prepare not just for the next stage of school, but for life beyond the classroom.
How can you help your child at home?
Practising times tables is a priority for both classes, but especially Year 4, as they have the statutory Multiplication Check at the end of the year which tests their times tables recall. Both year groups should also be reading every day, practising spellings and keeping up with their homework, which is set on Fridays.
Supporting your child with organisation and routines is also key in Years 4 and 5. Helping them to manage their time, complete homework, and pack their own school bag each day encourages independence and responsibility. Celebrate their efforts and progress, not just results, to build resilience and a growth mindset.
Most importantly, take an interest in their learning, and reassure them that it’s okay to make mistakes—it’s all part of learning. Your encouragement and positive outlook will help them develop the self-belief they need to succeed.
St David - Our class Saint
St David is the patron saint of Wales, whose saint's day is celebrated annually on 1 March.
St David (or 'Dewi Sant' in Welsh) was born on the south west coast of Wales, near the present day city of St David's. His family was aristocratic. He was educated at a monastery and became a missionary, travelling through Wales and to south west England and Brittany to spread Christianity. He is also supposed to have visited Rome and Jerusalem.
David founded a monastery where St David's stands today. He died in 589 AD and was buried in the grounds of his own monastery. He has been the patron saint of Wales since the 12th century.
